Project 365/19: I've been playing around with night shots quite a lot, mostly because of when my free time falls. I need to do a lot more playing and reading because I still don't really know what I'm doing. I'm also considering doing an online class devoted to night photography.
Oh, you ask what this is? It's an airplane going by! I live under a flight path near O'Hare Airport.

Project 365/18: I really do want more dog photos. Not necessarily disembodied paws like we see on the left side, but Freya always makes herself known somehow. I'm trying to get Axel more accustomed to posing. You would think that a show dog would be more comfortable in front of the camera, but there must be something different in his little doggy brain about a photographer taking a picture and Mom taking a picture.

Project 365/17: I want some good photos of the dogs. This is probably not one of them. But Freya is having such fun playing with her plushie buffalo. Or more likely, her big smile is because she is successfully keeping it away from her brother Axel.

Project 365/16: Today I just want to show you all one of my new toys. It's a practice amp that looks just like its full-sized counterpart. It's very, very small. See?
Lesson for the day: it's harder than I thought to hold a camera perfectly steady. I do have a mini tripod for this point and shoot. I'll need to find that, and shop for a remote and a tripod for the DSLR. This would be a good use for my ThankYou Rewards points and Amazon gift certificates!

Project 365/15: Here's my first try at shooting the moon (heh). I definitely should have used a longer lens and a better way to steady the camera. My goal is to eventually get a good "tsuki no usagi" photo. Ummm, not the Sailor Moon character... in the west, we see a man in the moon. So proud to be Asian: we see a rabbit in the moon, pounding mochi! There is a song and everything but I don't remember how it goes.

Project 365/14: "Things Rottweilers Like," or finding a possible subject when you've let the day and most of the night get away from you, you don't feel up to going back out into the cold, and you don't feel up to clearing away clutter to do indoor pet portraits.

Project 365/13: I am a little bit obsessed with icicles as instruments of death, thanks to an episode of CSI: NY and one of CSI: Miami. While we have had serious injuries and even deaths in downtown Chicago due to falling ice, it's not generally icicles but huge chunks of ice falling from a great height off high-rise buildings.
So my fear that the icicles forming on the garage will impale one of the dogs is pretty irrational. Or so I told myself as I got under the icicle to photograph it!

Project 365/12: Today I revisited the rose bush to experiment with the aperture priority mode on the DSLR. To add another learning opportunity, I also shot this in raw + JPEG. This is the high-quality JPEG straight out of the camera. I'm using the raw version to learn about processing the file in Photoshop CS4 with the Camera Raw plugin. I got a crash course in Camera Raw this morning at work from our most excellent retoucher Dan, and now I'm reviewing the Camera Raw section of the help file. I'll be a while, don't wait up!

Project 365/11: I fell asleep on the couch while watching the late night talk shows. When I woke up, the snow had just started falling. I didn't want to take the DSLR out in the weather, so I tried a few shots with the point and shoot to see if the falling snow would show up in any kind of interesting way. The outtake shot shows the swirling snow better, but I chose this one since it is of the same tree as yesterday night's shot.
